THE PART NOBODY WARNS YOU ABOUT

You do not find out you picked the wrong form until it is too late.

The IRS does not warn you at the start. You fill in the short form because someone said it was easier, you pay the fee, and then you wait. Somewhere between six weeks and six months later a letter arrives saying you were never eligible in the first place.

34
Questions, not five

Most “am I eligible” checklists online cover a handful. The IRS worksheet has thirty-four, and every one of them can disqualify you on its own.

1
Wrong answer ends it

A single yes anywhere on the worksheet takes the short form off the table. Not a warning, not a smaller form, but the full thirty-page Form 1023 instead.

Questions people ask first

Is the eligibility check really free?
Yes. All 34 questions and your result cost nothing and need no card. We ask for an email so we can send you a copy, because people come back to this weeks later.
What is the difference between Form 1023 and Form 1023-EZ?
The 1023-EZ is a roughly 3-page online form for smaller organizations, typically approved in weeks. The full 1023 runs to about 30 pages, asks for narrative descriptions and three years of financials, and takes considerably longer. Full comparison here.
What happens if I do not qualify?
We show you exactly which questions ruled it out and point you at the full Form 1023. There is nothing to buy on that path. If you want help with the long form, book a free call and we will tell you what it involves.
Do you file it for me?
Not with this tool. It is a self-help guide, and you file directly with the IRS. If you would rather someone handled the whole formation, that is our 501(c)(3) filing service, coordinated with licensed nonprofit attorneys.
Is the IRS filing fee included?
No. The IRS charges its own user fee at the time you file, paid directly to the IRS. Check IRS.gov for the current amount.
